1.Hypothetical #1. You live in a small town where there is a relatively large use of heroin. In spite of the widespread use of heroin, there is little awareness of the situation by non-users, and there are few treatment options available to users. You want to remedy both situations by making a video documentary about heroin users in your community. Ask your students how do go about making this documentary? How would they present the activities of heroin users? The following issues should surface is classroom discussion
In the instance of making this documentary as journalists, we will use both types of cameras because, in one part, they permit us to see how the protagonists of our history act in real situations without the pressure of being recorded or living with a camera 24/7 around the person, and on the other side, normal cameras allow us to be closer of the characters, giving us the possibility to ask direct questions and create an interview atmosphere. They also give us the chance to speak and have a connection with the people that are drug’s consumers and they can show you their social reality and difficulties about their lives.
A negative point, independently of the type of camera, are the risks that a film-maker is exposed to. In the case of a drug consumer we cannot assure how this person is going to react, especially under the effects of these psychotropics that in one way or another are going to modify the perception and senses.
Illegal is when you violate or you don’t respect something that has a legal protection and background
Unethical is when you don’t respect values, beliefs, etc with your action
We must protect them because they are immersed in a society that most of the times discriminates those who act ‘against’ the normal ideas or paradigms. We have to protect their images, the person itself. As they are giving us information, is or duty to take care and do not violate their rights as a response of their willingness
In the case of minors we have to protect their identity no matter what, even if we have their consent. It’s a legal issue and we cannot expose them in such a violent form
The documentary is going to be for viewers with the necessary discernment in the topic. People who can differentiate the different actions and scenes of the documentary (14+) In the case of a drug consumer some of the fears or anxieties that he/she can suffer doing the documentary are the future retaliations (revenge) from others drug consumers. Maybe through the process of filming the documentary and his/her own experiences the consumer can reflect about the damage produced in his/her body and the fear of a possible death or murder can appear.
We, as film-makers, are going to look for rehabilitation centers in order to show a clear interested in the help of our protagonists, just in the case that they want and accept it. In any case this help will be mandatory
In order to protect our protagonists we can apply different techniques, the most common are blurring faces or showing the silhouette of the person, especially if they are kids, what has to be whatever the reason is. The technique will depend on how much we can protect the image of the people, in some cases it will be necessary change the voice. Moreover, if the person is comfortable giving its declarations in front of the camera we will not use any kind of filter. We don’t think that destroying tapes will be a good strategy because being a documentary it’ll be something to keep as data. As we said before, we are going to protect the identity of our protagonists, so in any case we are going to expose them to the police, and of course we are going to be responsible of all the videos recorded and keep them as private property
